It is an honour to have my book on sale at the community hubs on these islands, which have a long history of land struggles. The community spaces serve a vital role in the community. What is called the ‘Long Island’ is actually made up of a number of different islands, all connected by causeways now, apart from Eriskay and Barra. On my recent visit, I learned a lot about the situation of land ownership- interesting to contrast South Uist and Eriskay, along with most of Benbecula, which are in community ownership, with North Uist under private ownership, mainly by one landowner, and Barra which is owned by the Scottish government. I will soon be writing a piece on what I learned.
